Winner’s Mini Golf and Amusements

PDF Print E-mail
Ricky Norman and Allen Smith came to the SBDC January 5, 2005 with a very unique idea. They proposed to open a mini golf operation at the hotel where Mr. Norman was employed. They had already obtained approval from the hotel but they needed assistance with financing this venture.

I, Daryl Edwards, Business Counselor II, scrutinized this idea with a fine tooth comb. When I pointed out any potential problem related to this venture, Mr. Norman and Mr. Smith was prepared to answer my questions and backed up their answers with facts and figures. Their answers indicated they put a lot of thought into this venture and had conducted a lot of research.

They prepared a business plan which they brought with them to the counseling session. Together we reviewed the plan and edited where necessary. As a result, we were able to develop an effective business plan that included facts and figures based on a lot of research. Despite several setbacks, Mr. Norman and Mr. Smith persevered and opened the business November 2005. On May 24, 2007, Winner’s Mini Golf and Amusements was honored by the UVI-SBDC as “Small Business of the Year.”

The loan request was submitted to one bank but the request was not approved. We revised the financial projections and the loan package was submitted to another bank. The loan was approved, but for only half the amount requested. Despite these setbacks, they sacrificed and were able to open the business and to be successful. A bit of irony is the fact that when they expanded their operation to include bumper boats, they were funded by the bank that had originally declined their loan request!
