Softek, Inc.

PDF Print E-mail
In a highly competitive business world where technology is key and competitiveness is volatile and shifted across the globe, entrepreneurs with their vision, commitment, courage and a little luck can find a world of opportunities. SOFTEK, Inc. and its founding president along with his partners represent a clear example of today’s business world.

Founded in 1991, SOFTEK, Inc. is a high tech company that has pioneered new technology applications for industry and government in Puerto Rico and in global markets.

SOFTEK, Inc. evolved from parent company Engineering Service Organization (ESO), which was founded in 1984 by Engineer Julian Londoño as a one person operation and sole propietor. In 1982, Mr. Londoño became fascinated by the introduction in the market of the personal computer. He and a friend dedicated themselves to learn about computer programming and to create applications for the pharmaceutical industry where they held a secure day job as engineers. Among the applications they developed, there was one to manage computerized records for plant maintenance. Mr. Londoño decided to present it to one of the local top executives for a pharmaceutical company. The executive was so enthusiastic that he gave him a contract to create the application for the Puerto Rico plants and sent him to the corporate headquarters to make a 10 minutes presentation to the CEO.

The CEO also became intrigued by the application and authorized the implementation for all of the plants worldwide. Eventually, ESO successfully completed the deployment of maintenance packages for over fifty five (55) plants worldwide. This accomplishment provided the roadmap for the creation of SOFTEK.

As a second generation company, it started to address other specific needs within the Information Technology industries in areas such as Software Development, Systems Integration and IT consulting for both public and private sectors. While the company continued to grow, the integration of a new managing partner, Mr. Archer Lebron, brought to the company the corporate expertise and business model to be blended with the vision and entrepreneurial spirit that pervaded it. Eventually, Softek grew its revenues from $3,000,000 to almost $20,000,000 with over 90 employees. In spite of this hyper growth through opportunities domestically and internationally, Softek, Inc. is currently receiving assistance from the ITC of the Puerto Rico SBTDC in areas such as cash flow projections, identification of international markets and financing for its local business and exports. At present, Softek, Inc. is negotiating additional financing for $1,000,000 with the assistance of the International Trade Center. In addition, Softek received was assisted in accessing a commercial mortgage loan to access financing for their new facilities amounting to $2,500,000. Furthermore, the ITC is assisting the client with its expansion in the Dominican Republic with the help of the Commercial Office of the US Embassy in the areas of client credit evaluation and legal aspects of doing business in that country. In addition, the ITC is working with Softek to obtain special tax rates from the state government for its research and development activities. These strategies should help Softek’s business model to be more competitive in the international arena.

The ITC, recognizing the success of Softek, Inc. in foreign markets, submitted the nomination package for the SBA award as a Small Business Exporter of the Year. Softek was recognized as the SBA Region 2 (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands) Small Business Exporter for the Year 2007.
