Dome Technology, LLC

PDF Print E-mail

Barry South started Dome Technology, LLC in the 1970s using the technology of building monolithic concrete domes by spraying concrete to the inside of a pressurized, domeshaped, fabric air form.

Barry and his brothers developed and patented the technology that Dome uses today to build concrete industrial and architectural dome structures up to 300 feet in diameter. Dome Technologies has built more than 400 domes in 44 states and 23 countries, or 75% of all monolithic concrete dome structures worldwide. They are primarily used for commodity storage, schools, and churches.

The Dome Technology superstructures have withstood some incredible tests including one of their concrete dome designs built in Iraq. During the Iraq war, the U.S. military targeted one of the concrete domes with their biggest 5000-pound bunker buster bomb. Amazingly, the bomb went through the roof of the structure and exploded, virtually obliterating the interior of the building. However, it did little damage to the concrete dome structure itself.

Dome Technology experienced healthy growth up until September 11, 2001. At that time, Dome employed 135 people, but by May of 2002 there were only 35 left. During that difficult period Dome sold many buildings at cost in order to survive, and they borrowed approximately $1 million to keep the business going. The Small Business Administration provided two of the loans. Today Dome Technology has rebounded, growing to 140 employees. Sales in 2007 have been explosive with growth reaching potentially 300% more than any previous year. Sales are currently at $40 million and could reach as high as $60 million before the end of the year.

Dome Technology currently has eight projects under construction and contracts for 12 more which may double or triple the annual sales of past years. The demand for dome structures is accelerating due to their efficiency, strength, lack of interior support beams, and they are stronger pound per pound than almost any other structure type. The company is very well known internationally.

Dome Technology is currently building a large structure for housing Bank of America mobile teller units for use during times of disaster. This structure will provide near absolute protection against natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes) – designed to withstand 300 mph winds.
