When Helsel Lumber first came to the Saint Francis University Small Business Development Center, its sales were entirely domestic and beginning to decline. The owners of the 81-year old Blair County company recognized the potential demand in the international market for their hardwoods, but they had no experience in direct exporting and needed help.

Her father and brothers were running Angoco’s Equipment Rental, a family-owned heavy equipment rental business. “Growing up around heavy equipment and a business orientated family has always been a part of my life and is probably one the reasons for starting my own business.” says Toni.

YOLO Colorhouse

YOLO Colorhouse used technology to build an online commerce platform to sell and distribute its products to customers who do not have a store in their marketplace. This dynamic website, www.yolocolorhouse.com, is a primary branding and marketing tool for YOLO. The company also uses Net Suite, a specialized computer software CRM system, to capture and cultivate its growing community of users, both trade and consumer.

The story of coming to the SBDC is a common one. The results, however, have been uncommon. Owner Shorty Koger called the SBDC upon the recommendation of her banker. She wanted to borrow money, and the bank was not able to say yes, but thought it would be of value to her company to talk with the SBDC
