Dr. T. Murt Byrne, known as Dr. Murt, has been practicing veterinary medicine in the Eldorado community since 1993.

His business, the Eldorado Animal Clinic, has grown from two people working out of a rented space to a flourishing practice with his own building with 25 employees.

Byrne credits a good part of his success to the advice he received from the Small Business Development Center based at Santa Fe Community College.

"They helped me through the whole process," Byrne said. "It's something I couldn't have done without them."

Debbie Collins, a certified business adviser and marketing coordinator at the Santa Fe SBDC, has helped Byrne with his practice in recent years and is proud that he has done so well.

"He has been a client of ours for quite some time; that's why I nominated him as a success client of the Santa Fe Small Business Development
Center," Collins said. "He has gone to develop a a very successful business as a result of working with us."

Byrne, along with 20 other outstanding businesses from across the state, will be honored Thursday at the NMSBDC 20th Anniversary Gala at La Fonda on the Plaza.

The businesses from Northern New Mexico that will be honored in addition to the Eldorado Animal Clinic are Route 66 Restaurant in Las Vegas, Pet Pangaea in Los Alamos and Atlas Fitness Center Gino's Gym in Espanola.

The gala at La Fonda starts with a 5 p.m. news conference, includes a reception from 6-6:45 p.m., and finishes with dinner beginning at 7 p.m.

The New Mexico Small Business Development Centers have been the choice of more than 79,000 New Mexico entrepreneurs over the last 20 years, during which time the network's clients have created 17,000 new jobs and 7,600 new businesses.

A lot of businesses are suffering through the recession, but "Eldorado Animal Clinic is holding its own," Byrne said. "And we're pretty confident that things will turn around pretty quick."

The Small Business Development Center isn't through working with Byrne.

"We're talking about a marketing campaign that will get his business moving to another level," Collins said. "This is the way we remind the community we're here for new challenges that come along."

Gino Brazil, the owner of Atlas Fitness Center and Gino's Gym in Espanola, started his business in 1982.

"I moved around a lot -- for 14 or 15 years," Brazil said. "Land was at a premium, and building space was at a premium."

Brazil ended up with a building in the Espanola Industrial Park.

Ralph Prather of the Small Business Development Center was there to help the fledgling business, as was Julianna Barbee, now director of the NMSBDC at Northern New Mexico College in Espanola.

"Julianna Barbee taught aerobics for me when I started, and now she is assisting me in marketing, graphic design and photography," Brazil said. "Julianna is redesigning my Web site, brochures and promotional packet and continues to shoot photos of activities at the center."

In addition, "she always checked on me," Brazil said. "I've had a long-standing position with them. I appreciate what they do for the community. Kudos to them."

"One of the things I've taken advantage of is the classes" offered by the Small Business Development Center in Los Alamos, said Cindi Wells, owner of Pet Pangaea. "They help me keep focused on the important parts of the business. I found them all to be very interesting and useful."

With the help of the SBDC, Wells said she is expanding and remodeling her business to include, among other amenities, an underwater treadmill for canine fitness and a saltwater fish facility.

Pet Pangaea is five years old and has almost tripled its revenue over that time. The store has five employees and carries more than 6,000 products.

The word Pangaea means "supercontinent." Wells used the name for her store because she hopes it can become a supercontinent to help pets and humans in the community.
