Maryland’s Small Business Development Center network celebrates 20 years
As a veteran of small development organizations elsewhere in the country, Brian DuBoff is glad he arrived in Maryland in time for the 20th anniversary of the state’s Small Business Development Center network.
DuBoff, a New Jersey native, was named this year as the College of Southern Maryland’s director of Maryland’s southern region Small Business Development Center.

Business center honors founder of cookie firm
The founder of a local cookie company will be honored June 11 as Small Business Person of the Year by the St. Francis University Small Business Development Center.
W. Zane Feathers, president of Shirley’s Cookie Co. Inc., Claysburg, will receive the award at the SBDC’s annual awards luncheon at the university.
Feathers, who started the business in 1967 when he purchased a Duncansville-based doughnut shop and restaurant, said he was surprised to be selected.
FAU cuts funding for small-business center
Threatened by budget cuts, the Small Business Development Center at FAU is looking for new sponsors.
For 30 years the Small Business Development Center at Florida Atlantic University has been helping entrepreneurs launch and grow businesses. Now the institution -- which provides free counseling and training -- is fighting to keep its own doors open.
FAU, which has supported the organization since its inception, said it will not fund the center after Dec. 31. That has left the SBDC searching for about $425,000 so it can pull down matching federal funds and maintain its 28 employees and 10 locations.
Fitial declares Small Business Development Month

Gov. Benigo Fitial declared June the Small Business Development Month for the 11th consecutive year in a proclamation signed on Capital Hill Monday, opening a series of management workshops for the local business community.
“I urge the people of the Commonwealth to participate in the small business workshop events and take advantage of the vital services and programs offered to our citizens” by the NMC Small Business Development Center and the Commonwealth Development Authority, Fitial said.
