"There are no grants for starting a business.” This is almost a mantra for those of us who work with people trying to get a business off the ground. Locally, the statement is about 99.7 percent accurate. Of the 700 clients the North Coast Small Business Development Center will see this year, for example, perhaps one or two would qualify for a government grant to get underway. With that one significant exception, which we'll describe below, the government doesn't provide startup grants.

As a veteran of small development organizations elsewhere in the country, Brian DuBoff is glad he arrived in Maryland in time for the 20th anniversary of the state’s Small Business Development Center network.

DuBoff, a New Jersey native, was named this year as the College of Southern Maryland’s director of Maryland’s southern region Small Business Development Center.

Business center honors founder of cookie firm

The founder of a local cookie company will be honored June 11 as Small Business Person of the Year by the St. Francis University Small Business Development Center.

W. Zane Feathers, president of Shirley’s Cookie Co. Inc., Claysburg, will receive the award at the SBDC’s annual awards luncheon at the university.

Feathers, who started the business in 1967 when he purchased a Duncansville-based doughnut shop and restaurant, said he was surprised to be selected.

FAU cuts funding for small-business center

Threatened by budget cuts, the Small Business Development Center at FAU is looking for new sponsors.

For 30 years the Small Business Development Center at Florida Atlantic University has been helping entrepreneurs launch and grow businesses. Now the institution -- which provides free counseling and training -- is fighting to keep its own doors open.

FAU, which has supported the organization since its inception, said it will not fund the center after Dec. 31. That has left the SBDC searching for about $425,000 so it can pull down matching federal funds and maintain its 28 employees and 10 locations.
